REMATEC Masterclasses 2025: BORG Automotive present rEUman as a step on students’ career pathways

Amsterdam, 9 April 2025 – An intensive programme of REMATEC Masterclasses 2025 engaged more than 40 international students visiting the leading international fair on remanufacturing in automotive industry held at RAI in Amsterdam on 8th-11th April 2025. This time the Masterclasses combined hands-on technical workshops with insightful career guidance sessions. BORG Automotive, co-organizer of the Masterclasses and at the same time a partner of rEUman Horizon Europe initiative, approached the challenges and opportunities in remanufacturing based on their own experience, pointing at the ambitions of rEUman as useful career orientation. As early evidence shows, there are substantial needs for new knowledge support the enhancement of circular practices through manufacturing in the automotive sector, what may be not only the most valuable option to maintain the value of materials and components in the loop, but also a matter of strategic choice for the European car manufacturers at large to boost their competitiveness. In this sense, REMATEC Masterclasses figured as an exclusive platform for university students to learn from academics and explore future career opportunities in remanufacturing.

The day was structured around engaging workshops that bridged academic theory with practical applications. Participants explored contemporary remanufacturing aspects, covering topics such as reverse logistics; automation in the disassembly and assembly processes; cleaning and inspection techniques; eco-design principles; product passports; innovative business models; and warranty issues. An overview of the remanufacturing process was in the focus, emphasizing its impact on the advancement of the circular economy and sustainable industrial practices.

The rEUman initiative came handy as a central element of the Masterclasses. rEUman  not only reinforces the academic framework necessary for understanding remanufacturing but also presents practical insights that are critical for career development.

A dedicated session was held to offer targeted career advice. The students had the opportunity to interact directly with experts from various companies and specialists from the rEUman project present at the Fair. These discussions offered guidance on academic research and career development, helping students shape their paths into the future of remanufacturing.

Lorenzo Gaspari, representative of BORG Automotive, encapsulated the day’s achievements:

"As BORG Automotive, we are proud to co-organise the REMATEC Masterclasses and are very pleased with the achieved results. We aim to ensure that students interested in remanufacturing gain a strong foundation, both for their studies and for finding relevant career opportunities. Therefore, we decided to present the rEUman initiative, as it addresses cutting-edge topics that will be relevant for the next decades. Additionally, we organised a session with various consortium partners to provide career advice and help students fine-tune their research activities.”

The event reflected a broader collaborative spirit. By partnering with esteemed institutions, BORG Automotive and the organising team ensured that the Masterclasses served as an effective bridge between the academia and the industry. In this way, the Masterclass not only reinforced the relevance of remanufacturing in today’s market but set a new standard for integrating technical training with career development. With initiatives like rEUman leading the way, the future of remanufacturing looks promising—and the next generation of industry experts is already on course to redefine it.
